How did Pelham, N.H., get its name? A. Although Pelham was not incorporated as a town until 1746, and indeed was considered part of Massachusetts, its settler history goes back to John Butler and David Hamblett. In 1721, the two Woburn men started clearing land in what is now Pelham, returning the next year to plant and build a cabin. In 1723 they brought their families to the property and all moved into the single cabin.
