N Brown, which focuses on the older, larger woman, has demonstrated what happens when a retailer gets its ranges right. It has seen turnover rise thanks to a reinvigoration of its ladieswear division, where sales were up 9 per cent to GBP245m. This, in turn, was driven by the "younger" catalogues, aimed at the 30-45 age group, which delivered sales of GBP117m, up 15 per cent on the year. Going forward, N Brown believes that it will continue to benefit from longer-term demographic trends, with the number of customers aged 45 or over expected to rise by 15 per cent in the next decade.
