Mexico will be importing increasing volumes of pork from North America in the medium term as trade barriers are dismantled and domestic production fails to keep up with the needs of a wealthier populace.
Whereas the Mexican industry will raise output by around 1.3% this year, offtake is expected to climb by 2%, reports Agriculture and AgriFood Canada (AAFC).
This will leave a deficit of over 400 000 tonnes this year - a gap which Mexican analysts see rising to more than 650 000t by 2006.
