It's always a pleasure to note the appearance of a first book from a promising writer, especially one as promising as Carol Lea Benjamin. This Dog for Hire (Walker, $20.95, 242 pages) is the initial appearance of PI Rachel Alexander and her partner, a pit bull named Dashiell. Dash is a good guy to have at your back, especially if you're exploring the New York City piers in search of clues to the death of an artist just making his mark on the local scene.
