PBS stations kick the fall season off this very evening with WETA's telecast of "In Performance at the White House" at 8, a tribute to the anniversary of the 1954 Newport Jazz Festival. Thelonious Monk Jr. presides over an hour of jazz from the south lawn of the White House, capped by a jam session with President Clinton on saxophone. The production, taped on a hot night last June, marks the resumption of "In Performance" by WETA, which began telecasting the specials during the Carter Administration.
