When I first saw this month's "Gravity Gains" photos (starting on page 124) featuring a workout on the beach, it stirred visions of the postwar golden days of Muscle Beach in Southern California. The shoot was actually done where the original Muscle Beach once thrived - in the shadow of the Santa Monica Pier.
