Dominick Argento's "Miss Havisham's Fire" was born in disappointment. It was written as a star vehicle for Beverly Sills and the New York City Opera, but Sills dropped out of the project. It was, ultimately, performed without Sills in 1979, in a large opera house and under the close and mostly negative scrutiny of the New York press. And then it disappeared.
