PHILIPPA Pearce, author of the children's classic Tom's Midnight Garden, has died at the age of 86.
The novel was named last year as one of the ten books every child should read.
Tom's Midnight Garden won the Carnegie Medal on its publication in 1958 and is considered a masterpiece of children's literature.
It has never been out of print, selling millions of copies around the world.
Its popularity is such that Mrs Pearce was once mobbed in the streets of Japan.
