Michael Ondaatje seems to carry a lifetime of travels in his voice.
Born and raised on the island nation of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), he lived in London as a teen, then emigrated as a young student in the early 1960s to Canada, where he lives today.
In a recent chat from his Toronto office, the 64-year-old Ondaatje speaks softly in an accent that seems to blend British inflection with Canadian cadence.
