The Chinese have a saying, "Court glory, win disaster," the point being that it's best to keep one's head down, plod along, not strike the gods as being too lucky, too beautiful, too soon. Mediocrity has a way of keeping demons from the door. Surely by now the gods have noticed the decidely unmediocre Michael Chabon, who launched his writing career at age 26 with a rousingly successful novel--Mysteries of Pittsburgh--and whose three books since display a talent that seems as unlikely to fade as his remarkable good looks.
