Seven hundred and sixty-three pages is an awful lot for a third volume of a person's memoirs, especially one whose name is not household. Of the autobiographical third volumes in easy reach from where I'm sitting Bertrand Russell's and Anthony Powell's run to just 230 pages each, Casanova's Story of my Life Vol 3 stops at page 350, and only Simone de Beauvoir's prolix and tiresome Force of Circumstance (which some argue is really her third and fourth volumes merged into one) dar...
