Bureau of Labor methodology and findings on the issue of self-employment since the 1940s are analyzed. The decline of small farms, and farming generally, has lowered the proportion of self-employed Americans since the 1940s, which now stands at 7.5% of nonfarm employment. Midcareer workers ages 35-44 in services industries are the largest single bloc of the self-employed. Issues of the decline of unpaid family work, business incorporation measurements, and other postwar trends are also analyzed.
