Michael Heath and the Christian Civic League of Maine have teetered on a moral tightrope for a long time. With their announcement that they believe they are entitled to know the sexual orientation of elected officials so they can post it on their Web site, they finally have lost their balance. Heath's hasty retreat and apology, in response to the outrage generated by his suggestion, seem to indicate a struggle to regain the organization's equilibrium. Let's hope so.
