The history of early modern political thought have indicated the importance of theories of contract obligation. The 17th century debates about these theories must be enriched to further understand its meanings. margaret Cavendish's short prose romance, 'The Contract,' is an example of such political debate. It contributed much to a revised history of theories and suggested that romance is appropriate for the staging of problematic coexistence of coercion and consent and passion and interest.
