1/3 The story of "Mansfield Park" is credited to writer Jane Austen. And that's fitting - except not in the way one would expect. This romantic drama is not so much an adaptation of Austen's novel as it is a novelization of her life.

Writer-director Patricia Rozema used Austen's book - her third - as the foundation for the story. She augmented it with material gleaned from Austen's teenage journals and letters and then overlaid a patina of contemporary politics. The result is a story about a feminist writer who is two centuries ahead of her time.
