Ties with Malaysia continued their roller-coaster ride, with contentious issues as yet unresolved by year-end 1999. In January, the new Malaysian Foreign Minister, Datuk Syed Hamid Albar, said that his top priority was to ease tension in Singapore-Malaysia relations.
