Long ago, in a part of Greece known as Magnesia, a very unusual rock was discovered Iron spears seemed to "magically" stick to this rock. In China, people discovered that when they floated a piece of this rock in water, it acted very strangely. It turned around in the water, so that the same part of the rock always pointed north. This is how the first compass was made. This rock was called lodestone, or "leading stone." Today we call it magnetite.
