When figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi arrived at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games held in Albertville, France, she was the reigning United States Nationals Ladies Champion, and considered one of the favorites to win the gold medal.

Yamaguchi, who was 20 years old at the time, had already won silver medals at the previous three U.S. Nationals and was the 1991 World Figure Skating Champion. Yamaguchi went on to win the `92 Olympic gold medal, and when asked about her expectations for that competition, she confessed in an interview by phone: "I was hoping for a medal but never expected to win."
