HENRY LOUIS GEHRIG was born to German immigrant parents in Manhattan's Yorkville district on June 19, 1903. His three siblings did not survive past infancy. After a turbulent childhood and adolescence he attended Columbia University for 2 years supported by a football scholarship. A Yankee scout named Paul Krichell recognized Gehrig's prowess on the baseball diamond and secured a salaried position for him.
