THERE are few things moreinfuriating than a holiday that begins with the realisation that your luggage has failed to arrive at the same destination as yourself. The nuisance may then be compounded by indifference and inefficiency on the part of the airline in putting matters right as fast as possible.

Figures released today by the Air Transport Users Council show that British Airways has the unenviable position of Europe's worst airline among the major national carriers in terms of lost baggage, having mislaid 23 bags for every 1,000 customers it carried in 2006.
