Philip Mannheim of the University of Connecticut thinks that Einstein may have made a mistake in his general theory of relativity. He has proposed a simple modification that holds that at very long distances, the behavior of gravity changes from what classic theory predicts. His proposal could solve many of the big mysteries in astrophysics, such as the apparent need for most of the universe to be made of an invisible "dark matter," and the recent evidence that there is a cosmic "repulsive force."
