MY HUSBAND and I recently moved into a central London 1840s terrace house with a tiny garden - about 15ft square, with an additional paved area beside the house. The previous owners' maintenance was limited to mowing what passes for a lawn, but there is potential for an attractive town garden. The nub of the problem is that there are a number of what the estate agents described as "mature shrubs" in the garden, including a vast bay tree.
