The first time most Americans heard about the British folk-rock group Lindisfarne - and probably the last time as well - it was for a rather ungracious note on Rod Stewart's 1971 album "Every Picture Tells a Story."

Crediting the classic track "Maggie May," Stewart noted only that "the mandolin was played by the mandolin player in Lindisfarne. The name slips my mind."
