Sandra L. Whittington's letter {June 22} questioning Abraham Lincoln's sobriquet as the Great Emancipator reminds me of the axiom that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. For if Lincoln did not free the slaves, who did? Lincoln's speeches and writings show a lifelong opposition to slavery. When he said that he would free all slaves, no slaves or some slaves in order to save the Union, he did so to reassure the public, frightened by the oncoming collapse of the Union, that he would not put his well-known opposition to slavery ahead of the need to maintain the Union.
