Lime production is the largest chemical use for limestone and dolomite. The term "lime" refers to high-calcium and dolomitic quicklime, their hydroxide forms and dead-burned dolomite. This review restricts itself to a discussion of the U.S. lime industry.

Production and consumption

In 2002, U.S. lime production was about 17.9 Mt (19.7 st), a decrease of 1 Mt (1.1 million st) from 2001. Production was valued at about $1.12 billion.
