To an outsider, unfamiliar with horticultural lingo, gardeners must sound like a rather aggressive lot: nicking, pinching and forcing are just some of the ways we manipulate plants.
The fact is that no gardener can force a plant to do something it isn't inclined to do. We can plant it in places it wouldn't normally occur, or coax it into blooming a tad early or late but that hardly constitutes a show of force in my book.
