The 17th season of PBS' "Great Performances" opens Friday night from 9 to midnight on Channel 2 with an ambitious new production of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's "Show Boat." The telecast is a faithful restaging of the classic musical utilizing the assistance of William Hammerstein, son of the late lyricist and librettist of the show.
