William Carlos Williams, the kindly doctor from New Jersey, was a poetic innovator. Along with Ezra Pound and Amy Lowell, he was part of the Imagist movement that flourished in the first two decades of the 20th century. Imagist poets were concerned with using brief specific details to create word images. Williams's "The Great Figure" does just that, and helps young writers see that when it comes to poetry, less is often more.
