East Carolina University's Health Sciences Library has used laptop computers since 1988. The laptops serve as portable workstations that librarians can use throughout the library to perform online searching, word processing and other tasks that would otherwise have to be performed at in-place workstations. Librarians using laptops remain visible and accessible to students.
