The use of language by women in the West has changed dramatically with the emergence of the women's movement. The role of women in other countries such as Japan is also changing and their social roles and language usages are being re-evaluated. The existence of Japanese women has evolved from being deferential and polite to performing roles as wives of urban workers. They have gained political recognition. The language used by Japanese women will gradually change as their social position evolves.
