China's agricultural production may not be able to keep pace with its population growth due to a number of complex problems. Aside from having unproductive land, the agricultural sector is burdened by the rapid loss of arable land and a large amount of soil erosion. China's total area of arable land has decreased from 111.83 million hectares in 1957 to 95.50 million hectares. About 15% of farmland lose between 30 to 70 metric tons of soil per hectare due to erosion, while another 15% lose between 80 to 120 metric tons.
