L&T CLOSES SALES GAP WITH FOLEY'S: MAY CO. NEW YORK (FNS) -- Foley's, Houston, last year maintained its position as the highest volume division of May Department Stores Co., but Lord & Taylor gave it a good run, according to May's annual report.

With a 12.5 percent gain in sales against only 2.4 percent for Foley's, the New York-based chain's sales hit $1,147,000,000 just a hair short of Foley's sales of $1.15 billion. Sales per square foot at Lord & Taylor increased to $179 from $170 in the prior year. Foley's sales per square foot came to $148 against $146 a year earlier.
