Background

Kites have soared in the sky for over 2,000 years. Historians believe kites were independently invented in China and Malaysia. During the Han Dynasty in China (206 BCE--220 CE), Chinese General Han Hsin used kites to calculate the distance his army would have to tunnel through a besieged city wall. Kites also lifted military spies in the air to identify enemy army movements. In the late 19th century, Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright brothers experimented with kites, which contributed to the evolution of airplanes.
