The offices of the Print Department on the third floor of the Boston Public Library have the feel of cutting-edge New Deal. Phone messages are entered into a log. There are bound folios the size of a table for two at Locke-Ober, old wood and historic fans that belong in the Smithsonian. This is the lair of Sinclair Hitchings.
