Kandy may look like a typical black Labrador mix, but she's more than a dog to her companion, Deborah Cobb of Baldwinsville.
"I'd be lost without her," Cobb says.
Cobb lost the ability to hear due to measles when she was 2 or 3 years old. She got Kandy, a Canine Working Companion, on her birthday in 1988. Kandy is trained to alert Cobb to sounds around the house.
If the phone rings, Kandy touches Cobb with her paw, then leads her to the phone and sits until Cobb answers. Kandy does the same thing if there's a knock on the door. If a smoke alarm goes off, ...
