Today's Woman, February 1st, 2006
I decide to go to the grocery and look for something Mother might be able to eat. The thought of how much weight she's lost spurs me on. I buy orange juice in small cartons that I hope might be appealing.
It's too early for the salad bar, so I can't get soup. In the deli I ask for a tiny portion of Jello, German potato salad, and barbecue.
Embarrassed by the sizes, I find myself explaining the reason to a young girl behind the counter who I know couldn't care less.
"My mother is very ill," I say, "so I'm just trying to find something she might be able to eat."
"Oh," the girl barely answers...
