Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 83, a witty and sophisticated Hollywood producer, director and screenwriter who won two Academy Awards apiece for "All About Eve" and "A Letter to Three Wives," died yesterday in Bedford, N.Y. His nephew, Washington public relations executive Frank Mankiewicz, said he had been complaining of stomach pains at his home before his wife drove him to a hospital where he died, apparently of heart failure.
