GE Medical Systems on Monday announced a project to develop surgical instruments equipped with electromagnetic sensors that will allow surgeons to "see" their operating tools inside patients.

The project is being pursued along with Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics, a Memphis, Tenn., medical devices company.
