Composer and arranger John Philip Sousa bequeathed his extensive library of music for military and symphonic band to the University of Illinois in appreciation of Albert Hardin, who was a faculty member, and his conducting prowess. The collection contains a varied assortment of original band pieces, transcriptions of other composers' works for the band, vocal solos, violin pieces and other instrumental works.
