John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), the most famous band leader ever known, was stationed for a time at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center near North Chicago.

During Sousa's long career, he would perform around the world and compose 136 military marches, including "The Stars and Stripes Forever."

Sousa was born in Washington, D.C. to Portuguese and German immigrant parents. By age 7, he was learning to play the violin and soon after, other band instruments. In 1868, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps as an apprentice in the Marine Band.
