John L. Goldwater, creator of the enduring teen comic-book characters Archie and friends, whose images were based on Haverhill residents, died Friday. He was 83.
Mr. Goldwater grew up an orphan in East Harlem, N.Y. As a teenager, he left to travel across the country, working odd jobs as he went. After returning to New York several years later, he worked loading magazines at the docks before creating the Archie character in 1941.
"He loved Superman, and he wanted to create a kind of opposite to Superman," said his wife, Gloria.
