John Clendennin Burne Hawkes, Jr., was born on 17 August 1925 in Stamford, Connecticut, to Helen (Ziefle) Hawkes and John Clendennin Burne. His mother was the daughter of a banker, and his father's family descended from Irish gentry. As a boy Hawkes worked in a stable where he developed a fixation on horses that would later find frequent expression in his fiction.
