John Davenport, RIP

JOHN DAVENPORT was one of the tight Time Inc.circle in the heady Luce years during the war and just after that kept its eye on the looming menace in the East. The little fraternity included Whittacker Chambers and John Chamberlain and Jack Jessup and, yes, Henry Grunwald, the retiring editor-in-chief, a generation removed from Henry Luce, whose anti-Communism was instinctive and nourished primarily by his conviction (this was before the bishops had taken hold of Christianity) that it was not easy at one and the same time to be a Christian and a Communist.
