Jean Bauhin's interest in mineral collection arose out of his interest in botany. Born to French Protestant parents, Bauhin studied under Conrad Gesner, a leading naturalist, in Zurich, Switzerland and other foreign universities. Between 1563-1568, he practiced medicine in Lyons, France, but returned to Switzerland in 1568 due to religious persecution. Bauhin is noted for his 1598 work, 'Historia novi et admirabilis fontis,' which contains illustrations of the minerals in his collection.
