Juzo Itami, director of the popular movies "Tampopo" and "A Taxing Woman," was brutally stabbed in a gangland-style attack outside his Tokyo home Friday night, just days after his new anti-gangster movie opened to rave reviews here. The 59-year-old filmmaker was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for slash wounds on the face and shoulders. He is in stable condition and should recover fully, doctors said yesterday. Police said that members of the Yakuza, Japan's home-grown version of the Mafia, are prime suspects in the assault.
