Pianist and ex-Jazz Messenger James Williams led a quartet at One Step Down Friday night, but it was a solo performance, a medley of pop standards dedicated to the memory of Sarah Vaughan, that really distinguished the opening set. Encompassing several tunes, from a bittersweet "Tenderly" to an aptly sassy "It Don't Mean a Thing ... ," the homage elegantly reflected the many moods associated with Vaughan's splendidly rich voice.
