When firefighters responded to a hazardous materials spill in the North End in 1975, James J. Freeman Sr. knew what he had to do. The Boston fire captain did not think twice about risking his life to help save the lives of his colleagues. "It was a chlorine leak at a North End skating rink. He got hurt, but he got in there and shut if off. I think he and another guy got the worst of it," said his son James Jr. of West Roxbury.
