James Ellroy, 56, has made a career of shining a spotlight on the seamy underbelly of Los Angeles of the 1950s and '60s. The author of "L.A. Confidential," "The Black Dahlia" and "The Big Nowhere," Ellroy's stories are dark, the victims are young and pretty and the bad guys are really bad. In "My Dark Places," Ellroy wrote about the 1958 murder of his mother, a native of Tunnel City, Wis., and his efforts to find her murderer decades later.
