JAMES DAVID EBERT and his wife, Alma Goodwin Ebert, were tragically killed in an automobile accident on 22 May 2001. They were on their way from Baltimore to spend the summer at their beloved home at Woods Hole. Jim Ebert was then months short of his eightieth birthday, which would have been a fine opportunity for his many colleagues and friends to celebrate all he had accomplished for biology during an enormously productive life.
