James L. Buchanan started his career with the Boston Police Department by walking the beat in Jamaica Plain and Roxbury, but rose to the rank of deputy superintendent in just eight years. In 1968, he was appointed superintendent of the department, the highest of the uniformed ranks. "Dad studied very hard and passed every exam from patrolman to sergeant, to lieutenant, to captain, which is as high as you can go under civil service," said a daughter, Marie Proctor of East Bridgewater.
